Tara Fay
“I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change… I’m changing the things I cannot accept.” - Angela Davis. I am constantly looking for a better understanding of self, purpose, and perseverance. “Why am I the way I am?’ “Am I changing for the better?” “Am I using my voice and platform to help change this world for those who will come after me?” These questions cloud my mind like smoke alarms, but somehow I always find a sense of calm. I didn’t realize why, until I began to pay close attention to the people and things I intake. One of those people just so happened to be the incredible Tara Fay, an independent curator, street wear enthusiast, and artist based in Pittsburgh. I could go on and on about her Tweets that keep me in tears at the most random times, but I figured it’s best I talk about who Tara the human is. We often times see the “super hero” role placed over Black women who are seeking equality, and change and I think that right there is simply unfair. I refuse to give Tara that role, because she is SO much more than that. It is inspiring to watch an individual along their journey through this thing we call life, extend a hand to another to help them along theirs. Tara is a brilliant artist and creative spirit, but it is her heart that caught my attention. You can see that Tara is the kind of person that wants to see everyone ( Black women especially, femmes, and those of the LGBTQ community) win, and she will not rest until she can make that happen. And that right there ladies and gents IS NOT a superhero, that is an altruistic woman. I do not believe in giving people their flowers once they depart, I believe in giving it to them while they are here and can enjoy them. Tara has done so much for everyone in the city of Pittsburgh, and I’d like to personally say thank-you. Tara, I pray that you are showered with the love and support you so selflessly give to us all.
