Getting To Know : Ballad "The Curator Of Sensual Sounds"
When all becomes bleak, and our insecurities begin to surface, we grapple with the concept of "showing up". "Showing up" looks different for us all, for some, it's being physically present, for others, it is sharing something so vulnerable and introspective, like their artistic gifts. I believe the world wouldn't be what it is, and our favorite singles in our playlists wouldn’t sound the way they do, if it weren't for the masterminds behind them who decided to "show up". These days "showing up", just so happens to look and sound the part. Neo Soul Singer & Songwriter Ballad is what we like to call a “triple entendre”. Ballad's name is a prophetic affirmation of the beautiful ballads we hear in his music. Who is Ballad?
I am many things. I am a Creative; Person, Lover, Writer, Singer, and Songwriter.
We are all someone before we are our art, what are you? What makes Ballad who he is?
Who I am as an artist and person is the same person. I like to channel that authenticity between both parts of me, and “show up” however I’m able to.
What inspires your sound?
I would have to say "real-life experiences" have inspired my sound. These experiences both beautiful and ugly have played a big role in what you hear. Being able to reach back into your life experiences, to create music people can connect with is something that brings me inspiration.
What do you want your music to say to the listener?
I want my music to say to the listener as "cheesy" as it may sound, "they have a friend". I want my music to let them know someone sees and understands them.
It takes courage to be able to create music from an honest place that leaves people feeling heard, understood, and relatable. Not everyone can do that, but you have, and you’ve done it well. Would you say you’re proud of that?
Yes, I am proud of that. However, my pride in doing so isn't rooted in the expectation that someone will automatically “feel” or “relate” to it, just because it came from an honest place. I’m simply proud that something I’ve created left someone with a feeling they won’t forget. I like to be intentional in what I create, so it’s a great feeling when it translates to the listener.
Your latest record "Lemonade" is like something we've never heard before, can you touch base on what went into this record?
I wanted to create a song that wasn’t predictable in the sense, you couldn’t see where it was going. I wanted “Lemonade” to be a sound that wasn’t like anything you’ve ever heard because it’s mine. Ballad's not like anyone else, he’s himself and he wanted to translate that into sound, production, and lyricism.
What does an “off day” for Ballad look like?
On my off days, which are few these days, I like to go to one of my favorite spots. I enjoy meditating, and watching Anime, these activities keep me grounded.
What music do you listen to that people would be surprised to know?
I went through an “Emo Phase” like most of us. A few months back, I found myself listening to Fall Out Boy.
What is your definition of success?
My definition of success is being able to help those I love through something I love. Anything above that is a plus, pluses I would appreciate, however that is my definition of success. Being able to do what I love, and create what I love, is success to me.
Is there any way we can support you, that’s not linked to social media or any other public platform?
No. The support I receive is amazing. At the beginning of the year, things were different so to see now the outpour of love, and support is great. You guys show” up, write back, connect, and take an interest in what I do and who I am, and that really means a lot to me.
