Win: Born by a River
To any Black woman who may read this, I want you to know you are deserving. Deserving of peace, deserving of kindness, deserving of grace, and deserving of rest. It is easy to succumb to the pressures of the world leading you to believe that your rest is warranted once you achieve a certain amount of success, but it is a lie. Black women are deserving of rest because they exist, for that is the only prerequisite for such basic human rights. One impactful way we can change the narrative of a Black woman's relationship with rest is through film. Speaking of film, that reminds me of the incredible filmmaker from South London, Steph Tari Odu. Steph is currently working on a short film called "Win" backed by their production company "Born by a River (BBaR)" which tells the unseen story of a Black woman coming of age in a state of rest. The film itself will embody the message it's sending through a slow, unfolding meditation on its themes of rest, decline, and generational yearning. With directors like Steph and Co-Producers like Emma Norton and Maya Williams, this is a film that will share a beautiful lesson of the bliss of rest and leisure.
