Who is Jamie Hodges?
I'm a free thinker who prioritizes sustainability in all aspects of life. I'm driven by creative curiosity, and creative endeavors make me who I am.
Why do you believe you have a unique passion for sustainable fashion and design?
My passion for sustainable design grew because of my passion for fashion. I have loved thrifting since high school, but I really delved into it in college. The "Broke College" student trope was real, so I had to find a way to express that creativity somehow, and as a result, my passion blossomed.
Fashion lovers have been raving about the "Culture Collection." Its unique silhouette and upcycled twist are avant-garde, to say the least. What inspired this collection?
I attended an HBCU, and my experience there radicalized me and educated me on the African diaspora and culture. Seeing how it is expressed in different ways and bodies played a role. I'm an athlete at heart; "I’ve played sports since I was a fetus", and I wanted to find a way to mix the two. "Accumulated sportswear", I wanted to find a way to play with that and make it casual, I didn't want it to seem tacky or boring.
As a Howard alumna, would you say your time spent at the Mecca inspired your approach to fashion, culture, and sustainability?
Before attending Howard, it was embedded in my makeup, but I wasn't conscious of it until I got to Howard. When I got to Howard, I got to play with and accept my passion and inspiration. The theme of Black excellence is being engulfed and surrounded in it, no right or wrong way. Being able to be 100% authentic and truly express myself, I was able to do that, I was supported and uplifted. Howard played a role in it being accepted and expressed.
"Jamie's Chamber" what a name, and what a mantra. What is your creative process like (if you're comfortable sharing)?
My creative process is far from linear; it's a "jumbled mess" that I can only understand initially. It starts as a collection of unsorted ideas. I put ideas on paper, and from that list, I bring to life whichever idea I'm drawn to first.
Does your creative process change depending on what it is you're designing?
It does, based on what I'm experiencing or battling; it will definitely be reflected in my artwork.
"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me'." Given the trajectory and consistency you've exhibited, do you believe you're practicing this quote in your line of work?
I think for sure I am, with the tools I've been equipped with. I can be strict and hard on myself, with high standards that can stunt growth. I'm using my talents, and the gifts I've been given in the best way I can.
If you could speak face-to-face with 14-year-old Jamie, what would you say?
I would tell her to block out the noise and continue leading with her heart. In high school, a word constantly thrown at her was "selfish". The term back then had a negative connotation. It was about self-preservation, setting boundaries, and prioritizing her peace. I would give her as much love and support as she needed because she needed it.
Given the life and creative experience you've acquired, have you learned new ways to be kinder to yourself along your journey ahead?
Yes, I think so. The older I get, the more I want to read and soak up as much knowledge as possible. My creativity has allowed me to be more susceptible and open-minded to new experiences.
Who and what inspires you to create, design, and challenge yourself as an artist, designer, and fashion maven?
I can't say anyone has inspired my creative pursuits, but my family has definitely inspired me to navigate this creative journey of mine. Specifically, my sister 's pursuit of being a gynecologist, never giving up, in spite of rejection, to see she will be a medical student this fall has inspired me to be consistent and committed. My mom was born and raised in St.Louis, US military air-force, traveled the world, and didn't let her circumstances define her experience. I've been blessed in the ways I was brought up, my parents have inspired me to let the negative things drive me and push me forward.
What do you want the next 1 - 3 years to look like?
I am applying to get my Master's in fashion abroad. The words that come to mind are authentic, colorful, innovative, intentional, and whimsical.
Are you proud of who you are now?
Immediately, yes, especially considering my background and what I've gone through. I can definitely say yes. "Proud" is one word that comes to mind when I think of myself.
What advice would you give to the next generation of sustainable fashion lovers and creatives?
Trust yourself. Prioritize the noise that emerges from the path that you want to follow and allow it to shape and refine your journey. Roll with the punches because there will be. Never stop learning. Prioritize the breaks because burnout is real!
