Getting To Know: Michelle Kelly
Michelle Kelly is a multi-talented fashion stylist who is reshaping the very seam of the fashion industry. Michelle is the CEO of “MSK: Make Your Signature Known,” a fashion empire that is redefining the fashion industry. I was given the opportunity to interview Ms. Kelly about her unique styling and insightful pursuit of fashion entrepreneurism. Check out Michelle’s riveting answers below!
Who are you?
Michelle Kelly, MSK, is a multidimensional artist who has always possessed a unique outlook on life. From an early age, I knew I wanted to be in a creative field, because I had various interests. I’m a wardrobe stylist/specialist; fashion designer, dancer, writer, editor and musician—generally speaking, just a creator. I’m proud to be an individual, an outside-of-the box thinker and always strive to pave my own unique path and genuinely walk in and live my truth. I’m the culmination of living through different decades that represented various trends and fashion themes that have influenced what my signature style has evolved into to this day.
Why did you choose fashion styling as a career? …
I’ve dedicated a lot of time to developing and cultivating my creative interests and talents. And since I’ve always had a passion for fashion, it was a natural choice. I’ve had some very diverse influences over the years that contributed to my style. From the preppy fashion influences at the private schools I attended, to the urban, streetwear influence at my HBCU alma mater on the east coast. The ease with which I could coordinate outfits without even trying and my interest in sharing that skill with others, prompted me to begin styling professionally. I think even the most stylish among us could use a stylist’s invaluable keen eye and knowledge of what will best capture and flatter someone’s style, preferences and body type. Fashion is another creative outlet that allows me to express my artistic perspective and I find that very rewarding.
What according to you is your favorite part of being a fashion stylist?
MSK (Make (ur) Signature Known), is my style and fashion brand that allows me to creatively transform clients' images and appearances in a way that also reflects my own style and what I find fashionable. It’s exciting to create a look for a client that they may not have chosen otherwise, or help a designer bring their vision and creations to life for the world to see during photo shoots or runway shows.
The objective of MSK is to help others create their signature style, just as I’ve developed and express my own signature style and looks. I’ve styled for a variety of clients, from women to children, but I plan to concentrate more on athletes and plus-sized individuals. With me, you should expect the unexpected and I’ll normally include some surprise element that you may not have thought of. That’s the beauty of being a stylist, you get to expose others to things they may otherwise have not been exposed to.
The styling you’ve done is nothing short of vibrant and exciting, but who and which things were your inspiration while styling such looks?
I appreciate you saying that. I’m inspired by a variety of elements and factors. I notice details that others may miss. I use all of my senses—sight, hearing, touch—to truly capture the look or style I’d like to convey. It may be how the colors blend together and match one another or how the shapes of each piece may be similar and complement the other. Backdrops are really important to my work as well, so a mural, a city skyline or park will inspire me and I may build a look around what would look best against that background. I may hear a song that influences what look I create. I like pieces with volume, depth and unique detail that help them stand out. I can also take a more basic, simple piece and add my personal “MSK” touch to it. I try to include a piece or item that you wouldn’t necessarily expect in an outfit, but something you may consider trying after seeing how I coordinate a look. I would describe my style as unique, edgy, chic and classic.
Define fashion?
Fashion is a less recognized artistic medium that allows us to express our personal style and perspective through what we wear, without having to say a word. It allows you to be a walking billboard for what you think looks good and flattering and what message you want to convey to the world. It’s an extension of who you are as a person and what you consider important. Fashion can indicate whether you have an outgoing, assertive personality or are a more subdued, laid-back individual.
What do you want readers to know about you apart from fashion styling?
I love to create and am always in the process of refining and developing my ideas that I want to share with the world. I’m interested in and study spiritual arts and metaphysics, which has tremendously helped my growth and personal development. I’m passionate about health and fitness and aim to live as healthy of a lifestyle as possible. Although I am a self-proclaimed foodie, I do enjoy my share of gummy bears, chocolate and hard cider on cheat days. I’m also a writer and producer, who likes to express themselves through written word and film. I love to dance and discover new gems of music in various genres. I also like to have fun and have a good laugh and a good time. I can be very silly and like to joke around and make others laugh. What’s next for Michelle Kelly?
MSK is designing a few clothing lines, including some pieces that I’d describe as wearable art. Denim, cosmic and activewear collections will be available soon. I’m also publishing a collection of my poetry and short stories and producing films based upon them. I’m also developing several unscripted shows. Stay in the know by checking out my website!
