Getting To Know : Megan Chellew

Megan Chellew is a multi-talented journalist, environmentalist and thrift guru who is redefining our definition of a “good human being”. I was given the opportunity to interview Megan about her insightful pursuit of sustainable and environmental advocacy. Check out Megan’s riveting answers below!

Who is Megan Chellew?

There are many ways I would describe myself. I am an environmentalist, a scholar, scavenger, and curator. I’m also a cheerleader, who finds joy in supporting the success of others, especially my friends and family.

Why did you choose to be a sustainable fashion writer?

I’ve always had a ‘passion for fashion;’ I love writing and style because they are two of the greatest forms of communication. Both make me happy. Sustainability is a non-negotiable element in all aspects of my work - it’s the framework for everything moving forward. I’m not interested in pursuits that are incompatible with our planet’s vitality.

Tell us more about your role at “Slow Notion Blog”?

I’m the Communications Director and Co-Founder of theslownotion.com (@slow.notion.blog). We are a sustainable lifestyle blog that focuses on slow consumption, high style, and low waste. As Communications Director, I oversee content production, promotion, and audience engagement. I am also the architect behind ‘the voice’ of our blog, and help team members and contributors workshop their submissions in a way that aligns with our mission and values. I am a writer and content producer as well, I edit select compilation works from our team and share personal experiences through writing that I hope will resonate with others.

What does sustainability mean to you?

To me, sustainability is about habits which support ecological continuity in particular. Habits imply practice, thus we are more likely to be imperfectly sustainable over time. And while true perfection is unattainable, we must continually forgive, renew commitment to sustainable habits, and progressively build new ones. Sustainability also means community – everything is ultimately about the welfare of people and our planet. The only way to achieve change with any tangible environmental impact is through support and mutual aid. Unfortunately we are currently approaching challenges to sustainability on an uneven playing field. To change that we need to redistribute  access to knowledge and resources first.

What projects are you working on right now?

Right now I am seeking out local makers, writers, and creatives in Pittsburgh (and beyond!) with an element of sustainability in their work. I want to highlight their achievements and facilitate connection through the blog – let us help share your stories! I am also working on some writing of my own about topics which include low waste self care, coping with eco-anxiety, and personal style development, all which will be posted on theslownotion.com in 2022.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to thrift, read, write, and enjoy farmer’s market meals with friends. I practice tarot, play scrabble, and enjoy my time outdoors. Making time for rest is an essential part of my ‘off the clock’ routine.

Are there any sustainable fashion writers or creatives we should be privy to?

In terms of writers, I highly recommend Jessica DeFino – her work on sustainability in the beauty industry is revolutionary and life changing. I am also in awe of Aja Barber’s repertoire, which includes many works on the intersection of fast fashion, fatphobia, colonialism, and environmental destruction.
