Romeo and His (Brown) Crystal
In memory of Timmy Russell Jr. & Crystal Galia
He is now free of that junk. It’s not real. I wish it wasn’t.
I don’t want to be a statue, frozen
at the foot of his casket any longer, but I don’t want to leave
him. I can’t. My aunt and uncle slowly kneel and lean over his lifeless
body. Perfect. My aunt presses her lips to her son’s forehead. Romeo’s skin
is wrinkled, old Italian leather, soft and cold, but his pink, plump lips
beg for Juliet’s, an urgent thirst to go unquenched, for she sleeps
in the adjoining casket. His eyelids rest peacefully.
“This is not real.” I whisper, “They are just sleeping.”
