Please Don't Cry: Sonic Catharsis
“Clinging to society. Who always labeled me, but can’t define me quite entirely. Tiredly, I’m overcome wit it all.” - Rapsody “That One Time” - Please Don’t Cry. In the crevices of the words I can’t utter, some artists fill those pockets. Multifaceted, multidimensional, multi-purposeful artist, Rapsody gave every listener, music lover, and life experiencer experiences to remember through her fourth studio album “Please Don’t Cry”. I’ve been a fan of Rapsody the artist, and person for some years now, so her music has always been a place of sonic grounding for me. As I’ve experienced life and life experienced me, I’ve learned to pair beautiful bodies of work with the chapters in my life, and this album is just that. Please Don’t Cry ironically is an album that made me want to do just that! Looking myself in the mirror and appreciating what’s there, while grieving what I feel should be, singing the hook ever so softly of "3:AM" while setting my mind on cruise control as I listen to tracks like "DND". Music is the observer, the artist is the note-taker, and the listener is the study hall. All of these elements work in tandem to heal the listener and creator of the music. In a time when negative things flood our televisions, cell phones, and social media feeds, I think there’s something grand about feeling. “Please Don’t Cry, but if you do, laugh till you cry” and on the other side, you’ll remember the nostalgia the world is clinging so desperately to has never left, just lies dormant waiting for you to allow it to serve its purpose. Rapsody, thank you for your art and thank you for existing. Please Don’t Cry, is the album of the year, and the album that will go down in history, listen today!
