What makes Zaidra James who she is?
My upbringing. I was born and raised in Jamaica, and I didn’t grow up with my parents. I didn’t grow up with much, but I was okay with what I had. I appreciate the little things. I know how to work for everything I want, and these things have made me who I am: more open-minded.
When did you know you wanted to be a model?
I realized I wanted to be a model at twelve years old. When I first came to the United States, my mom was into pageantry and Victoria's Secret fashion shows. I saw beautiful Black women on the runway; although there weren’t many at the time, one in particular who stood out was Naomi Campbell. I saw Naomi’s confidence, and it radiated; I realized I also “wanted wings” and to model as well.
What has that pivot been like, from a 12-year-old self-actualized model to a worldwide multi-published model?
It's been great, I didn't just “dive into it”. I grew up “very athletic and rough” and into sports with lots of energy. I did ballet and ran track for some time, competing competitively in both. I then signed with the modeling agency Wilhelmina and had to pick. My mom ultimately pulled me, as it became too much; once that happened, I continued with ballet, track, and then strictly track. Once I got older, I could pursue modeling more after college.
How does it feel to serve as an inspiration to young Black women worldwide through your talents?
It feels very refreshing and good. Growing up, I had Naomi Campbell to look up to, but realistically, I couldn’t relate in many ways. After going through so much in my life, I feel I can pour into ladies who look like me by helping give them confidence if they lack the skills to do what they want to do to be happy. It’s refreshing, and it builds a legacy.
Are you proud of the work you’ve done and the legacy you’re building?
I feel like I’m finally in the right direction and “in motion”. At one point, I felt stagnant, and I had to learn and find myself. I had to go through a lot to get to where I am, so yes.
Who or what grounds you as you navigate the modeling industry?
It’s a few things: my relationship with God, my daughter, and the fact that my father always believed I could do it and always spoke over me, now that he’s passed on. It’s also something I love.
What is your why? Why do you continue to show up and create?
The younger version of myself and my daughter. I don’t want my daughter to live a life where she doesn’t do what she came to do. Everyone has a purpose; although I am talented in other things, it’s a part of my purpose to model, I wouldn’t feel fulfilled if I didn’t. I don’t want my daughter to watch me and not pursue what she loves, I want her to see me and try. I want her to look at her mom and know she can do it too.
Do you believe you’re someone younger Zaidra would be proud of?
Absolutely, Yes!
Are there any creatives you admire who fill you with inspiration along your journey?
At the beginning of my journey, Naomi Campbell was my main inspiration. Now that I am where I am in my journey, I don't look up to anyone for inspiration. I value everyone before and around me for inspiration, but I’m trying to pave my own way. I feel that looking for inspiration is a great thing to start with, but I don't want it to influence who I am too much. I want to pave my own way and focus on my own journey.
What can we expect to see from you this year?
Expect the unexpected. When God has his hand on your life, most people won’t recognize or see it. Even what I expect, God can surpass that. I started focusing strictly on modeling in 2024, and I’ve been able to do so much without a modeling agency or backing, just by the grace of God. I know this year is going to be greater than what has already taken place; it’s just the beginning.
